Joseph in Egypt

How to use this digital faith playlist...

  • Read/watch the story of Joseph in Egypt in Genesis 39-40
  • Wonder about one or more of the questions
  • Pray together
  • Do one of the activities and/or use the spiritual practice

A note to grown-ups: This includes the story of Potiphar's wife and some content that may not be appropriate for children. You may want to skip over Genesis 39:7-23 and simply say that one of the people in the story, Potiphar's wife, wanted to get Joseph in trouble and said untrue things about him. So, Joseph was put into jail. Then continue with the story about the dreams.

Bible Story

  • Read the story about Joseph in Egypt in your favorite Story Bible, or from Genesis 39:1-40:23 **(see note above), or Genesis 39:1-6 and 40:1-23, or watch the video.
  • Wonder about the story together:
    • I wonder how Joseph would have felt in a new strange place.
    • I wonder if you remember any of your dreams.
    • I wonder if you have any special talents.
    • I wonder what might happen next.
  • Prayer:
    • Dear God, maybe Joseph was scared when he arrived in Egypt or unsure of what was going to happen next. There are still scary things that happen in our world. We ask you to help us trust you in all the scary and uncertain times. (You may want to name something or someone here to pray about.) Be with us and our family and friends. Show us ways that we can help others who are afraid and thank you for those who are with us when we are afraid. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

  • Draw pictures of the dreams and faces of how the cupbearer and baker felt when they told Joseph about their dreams and their faces after their dreams came true.

Family Spiritual Practice

Silence

We live in such a noisy world. Kids may love their tablets and phones and other electronics, but they can also learn to love periods of silence. We can help them with this by practicing silence together when we’re with them. We can encourage them to simply be silent and enjoy being in God’s presence. Start with short periods, maybe only a few seconds and gradually add on to that. And we can encourage them to practice silence as part of their personal prayer time.
