Joshua the Leader

Moses had led the people out of Egypt and they had been wandering in the desert. Moses died and now it’s up to Joshua to lead the people. God spoke to Joshua to encourage him to be strong and courageous and to remember that God will be with them always. This playlist has a combination of activities and videos about courage and leadership.

Start by reading the Bible Story or watching the video and going through the wondering questions. Then pick the activities your family would like to do, as many or few as you like. Close your family faith time with prayer – use your own or the one provided.

Bible Story

  • Read the story of Joshua in your favorite Bible Story Book, in the Deep Blue Bible Storybook, or in Joshua 1:1-9. Wonder about the story together:
    • I wonder how Joshua felt when he was the new leader.
    • I wonder how you are a leader in your family, at school, or in your community.
    • I wonder why remembering the teachers of Moses and God was important to the people.
    • I wonder why remembering the teachings of God is important to us.
    • God told Joshua to have courage, I wonder how you show courage.
  • Prayer:
    • Dear God, thank you for the leadership of Joshua and for the example of how to be a good leader. Help us to be good leaders in our families, at church and school, and in our communities. Help us to have courage and be brave. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Leadership & Children

Leadership skills may come naturally to some children, but teaching and guiding all children with leadership skills as they grow is important. Here are a few ways that you can build leadership qualities with your children from Entrepreneur.

1. Set a good example
2. Build negotiation skills
3. Help learn decision-making skills
4. Encourage work
5. Teach project planning
6. Find a mentor
7. Encourage reading

We can encourage leadership in faith and church in many ways, including:

1.  Find a mentor
2. Encourage older children to work on a project from start to end (i.e. mission project, bake sale fundraiser, etc.)
3. Interview church leaders about what is important to them as they lead in the church and what they want children to know about leadership skills
4. Give children leadership positions (i.e. help with worship, when in-person resumes – usher, liturgist, greeter, etc.)
5. Read about faith leaders and what made/makes them great leaders
