Greater Southwest District FALL 2019 Lay Servant Courses

An event every week that begins at 9:00 am on Saturday, repeating until October 26, 2019
Courses are free – order your own book and bring a sack lunch.
You must attend all sessions to earn credit for the course.
Courses with fewer than 5 people will be cancelled.
All courses will be Saturdays, October 19 & 26 | 9am-3pm | South Haven: First UMC
Basic Course led by Dana Tipken
Required book: Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course Participant’s Book by Sandy Jackson
This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries. Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship.
Public Prayer led by Rev. Brenda Gordon
Required book: Shaping the Prayers of the People: The Art of Intercession by Samuel Wells and Abigail Kocher
Praying in public can be daunting, but prayer is something one learns. This course on praying in public will help the participant grow in confidence and skill in public prayer and enrich their personal prayer life. This course fulfills the “Leading Prayer” requirement for Certified Lay Speaker status.
From Your Heart to Theirs: Delivering an Effective Sermon led by Rev. Ron VanLente
Required book: From Your Heart to Theirs: Delivering an Effective Sermon by Tony Franks and David Carroll
Moving beyond the basics of public speaking and the foundations necessary for preparing an engaging sermon, this course also includes types of sermons – from exegetical to topical to children’s sermons – as well as how to find a story, use the hymnal, and how to move from communication on paper to beyond the paper. This course fulfills the “Preaching” requirement for Certified Lay Speaker status.
