Children and Youth Ministry Coordinator – Grand Rapids Aldersgate UMC

JOB DESCRIPTION:  CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRY COORDINATOR

JOB DEFINITION

The Coordinator of Children and Youth Ministry, under the supervision of the VLB (Vision and Leadership Board) and the pastor, shall provide a program of spiritual development and enrichment for the children and youth of the congregation. The coordinator will explore and implement enrichment and outreach opportunities. This position is part of the leadership team seeking to help our congregation fulfill the mission of the church.   This is a part-time salaried position, approximately 15-20 hours a week.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Knowledge and experience in the Christian education of children and youth and the supervision of education volunteers.
  2. Ability to select appropriate educational materials for children and youth in keeping with the United Methodist tradition.
  3. Understanding of the developmental needs of children/youth and ability to relate well to children/youth.
  4. Willingness to try new, innovative, and creative ideas in order to provide the most effective Christian education for the children and youth.
  5. Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, a collaborative spirit, ability to work well with others, and passion for working within a Christian environment.
  6. Willingness to participate in continuing educational experiences which relate directly to improving the educational opportunities in the church.
  7. The ability to deal with multiple tasks while prioritizing issues with strong attention to detail.
  8. Have a basic understanding of children and youth and the issues they face.
  9. Ability to engage in technology and communicate via multiple platforms.
  10. All staff members at Aldersgate UMC must be cleared through a background check.

MAJOR DUTIES

  1. Select and procure curricula, in consultation with VLB and pastor, inclusive in nature and reflecting a United Methodist approach and philosophy for youth and children. Purchase program supplies as needed and provide budget requests to the Finance committee for annual budget planning.
  2. Maintain good communication with the parents and care providers of children in the programs of the church.
  3. Identify, invite and schedule volunteers for education programs. Provide direction and support to Sunday school staff and volunteers by offering appropriate training and education in curriculum and policies.
  1. Be an advocate for all children and youth in the congregation, assuring that all policies and procedures maintain the
  2. highest standards for the well-being, safety, and protection of all children, youth, and vulnerable adults.
  3. Serve as camp coordinator, promoting UM camps to children, youth, and adults.
  4. Other responsibilities are mutually agreed upon by the Pastor and VLB.
  5. Available most Sunday mornings.
