Thoughts on clergy trends

The Rev. Ed Trimmer of Martin Methodist College reflects on the growing number of licensed local pastors in The United Methodist Church. Using research on clergy age-trends compiled by the Lewis Center, Trimmer observes, “[Today} the national average in The United Methodist Church is 2 elders for every 1 local pastor.  In 1990 there were 5 elders to every 1 local pastor.”

He adds, “If we are headed to a time when we have more local pastors than elders is it time to reflex those changes in our organization structure?”
